Article 1. Fire Department
There is hereby created in this city a volunteer fire department composed of a chief, an assistant chief, and no fewer than five (5) nor more than twenty (20) firemen.

The mayor by and with the consent of the council shall appoint the chief of the volunteer fire department.

(a) The chief of the fire department shall, under the direction of the mayor, have and he or she shall be responsible for the proper organization, training, discipline, and functioning of the personnel of the fire department and for the proper care, use, and safety of the equipment and fire apparatus.
(b) The chief shall give notice of the time and place for fire drills, the fire department which shall be at his or her pleasure to call.
(c) It shall be the duty of the chief to keep an accurate record of fire alarms, practice drills, and attendance at the same, and to make all reports required by law of the chief for the fire department.

(a) The chief of the fire department shall appoint the assistant chief and firemen of the department. (Code 1988)
(b) In the absence of the chief, the assistant chief shall have all of the powers and perform all of the duties of the fire chief.

Any subordinate officer or fireman who refuses or neglects to attend any fire or practice drill, without submitting an excuse which is satisfactory to the chief, or who shall neglect or refuse to do his or her duty or to obey the orders of his or her chief or his or her proper commanding officer or who shall leave his or her post of duty while at a fire, without the permission of the fire chief, shall be subject to expulsion from the fire department.

The chief of the fire department shall be paid a salary of $30.00 for attending each fire call and each fireman shall receive $25.00 for attending any such fire call.

The city shall make monthly payments of $30.00 for chief of the fire department and $25.00 per fireman in attendance at the monthly fire department meeting/training session to the fire department activity fund.
